What is Counselling & Psychotherapy (Therapy)?

Offers you a safe, confidential place to talk about your life and anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable. It allows you to talk with someone who is trained to listen attentively and work with you to improve things. However, you will not be told what to do.

What benefits can be expected?

The experience of exploring your thoughts and feelings with another person can relieve your sense that you are entirely alone with your problems. Greater self-knowledge and understanding can enhance your relationships with yourself and others and improve your sense of choices and self-esteem.

What is the Person-Centred approach?

Person-centred therapy is based on a deep respect for the person, and the belief that the relationship between counsellor and client is of primary importance. Person-centred therapists believe that it is the client who knows best what hurts and has the capacity to begin a healing process and that that process can be helped to unfold within the safe, non-judgemental, understanding type of relationship that person-centred counsellors are trained to offer.

The essential qualities which we believe as person-centred counsellors create a safe, supportive and challenging therapeutic environment include:

A deep acceptance of the person we are with.

A willingness to understand that person.

A commitment to being genuine in our relationship with the person.

These qualities, offered professionally and consistently, are the central characteristics of the person-centred approach to therapy.

What happens in a counselling/therapy session?

At our first session we will have an initial chat about what has brought you to counselling/therapy and how it is affecting your life. I will answer any questions you have and tell you more about what benefits you can expect. At the end of this session you can decide whether or not you want to continue with more sessions. There is no obligation to do this and you may want to think about it further before finally deciding.

However if you do decide to continue with more sessions, you will decide what you wish to discuss in each session. I will be with you to provide support and fully explore the issues and emotions around what you are bringing up. You will not be led down a particular path but will be supported in whatever path you wish to take. The number of sessions we have will be your decision and there will be no pressure on you to continue whatsoever.
